History
Ms Bea was adopted from Rudy’s Rescue approxiately 3 weeks prior to her initial visit. Her new owner had been working on trying to get some weight off of her by switching her to a grain free diet and adding canned pumpkin as a low calorie filler. She had noticed that Ms Bea seemed stiff when getting up from lying down. Her regular veterinarian diagnosed her with a cranial cruciate tear in her right knee.
Condition / Diagnosis / Findings
Post surgical TPLO; arthritis in her Lumbosacral region; Overweight
Therapy Goals
Ms Bea underwent TPLO surgery to correct the tear. Post surgically Ms Bea came to board with us and receive appropriate post surgical care. Her therapy initially consisted of Passive Range of Motion, Stretching, Thermotherapy, Cryotherapy and Laser IV treatments. Once her staples were removed she was able to begin underwater treadmill therapy to regain muscle mass and help with her weight loss. Her Laser treatments continued and new home exercises were added. Ms Bea was gradually walked for longer durations at home to help regain her strength as well as aid in her weight loss. Her owner did a fantastic job with home exercises and especially with her walks which they both enjoyed. With the new diet and her walks Ms Bea steadily dropped the weight with a total loss of nearly 15 pounds!
Progress Evaluation
: On 5/26/11 Ms Bea was found to be showing no signs of lameness at the walk or trot. She was equally weight bearing on all 4 limbs while standing. She was found to have some areas of muscle tenderness due to compensation while recovering from surgery. Overall she was doing fantastic post surgically at this point.
Progress to Date
As of August 2011 Ms Bea was continuing with in clinic therapy to continue gaining muscle. Her weight at this point is fantastic( nearly 14 lbs lost!) and a testament to her new owner’s commitment to her long term health. Ms Bea is on the road to graduating from therapy very soon, but plans to continue visiting!
