Weight: 96.6 lbs.
DOB/Age: estimated 4/29/95
History
Nelson was rescued from a home in Pennsylvania, where he lived on a chain in the backyard. His foster mom tried walking him ¼ mile each day. She said he started out energetic but about half way through the walk he started huffing and coughing.
Presenting Problems
Extremely overweight, unable to be neutered due to his weight, needs a good home
Condition / Diagnosis / Findings
Difficult to examine due to extreme obesity. Raspy cough with continuous panting. Decreased overall muscle mass. Difficulty rising in hindend; most likely due to weight. Joints appear normal.
Therapy Goals
Weight loss, increase muscle mass and endurance
Course of Therapy
The underwater treadmill was used to aid in weight loss, building muscle strength and improving Nelson's endurance. His foster mom placed him on a diet and walked him daily.
Progress Evaluation
After approximately three months Nelson had lost enough weight (25 pounds) that his primary care Vet felt it was safe for him to be neutered. He went thru the procedure like a champ and continued therapy in the underwater treadmill once his sutures were removed. He continues to loose weight and increase his activity level daily. His foster mom felt that he is ready to be listed for adoption.
Progress to Date
Nelson has lost a total of 35 pounds since initiating therapy!!! His energy and spirit have lifted since shedding all that weight. He is a happy, healthy dog whose foster mom has adopted him! We are so happy for him and his new life.
